U.S. Professor in Bahrain Charged With Insulting Prophet Muhammad

MANAMA, Bahrain —  An American teacher has been charged in Bahrain with insulting the Prophet Muhammad for displaying pictures of Islam's founder to university students, a spokesman for the tiny Gulf nation's general prosecutor said Friday.

The spokesman, Nawaf al-Maawdah, said the pictures showed the prophet in ragged clothing.

Most interpretations of Islam forbid any depiction of Muhammad because it is seen as encouraging idolatry — one of the biggest sins in the religion.

Al-Maawdah's reference to "ragged clothing" suggests the picture showed the prophet in an insulting way, which would make it particularly offensive to many Muslims. The spokesman did not elaborate on what the picture looked like.

He said the teacher also insulted a student for wearing a head scarf, which she described as "a barrier to knowledge." He declined to reveal the name of the teacher or the university.

A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said she could not release any information about the case or confirm that an American was involved.

According to al-Maawdah, the case has been referred to court, but no trial date has been set. A Bahraini newspaper reported that the teacher in question has left the country.

In 2006, the publishing in Denmark of cartoons depicting the prophet sparked riots across the Muslim world. And last year, a British schoolteacher was prosecuted and sentenced in Sudan for letting her pupils name a teddy bear Muhammad. The British teacher was later pardoned and allowed to leave Sudan.

Anakku Yang Hilang

Karya Yahya M.S

Di jenang pintu berdiri anakku

mula melangkah ke pinara dunia

bakal menjadi pendatang asing

mengharungi gelombang lautan tak bernama

dengan persoalan tak bergambar

Adakah ia akan seperti anak piatu

dan menadah tangan meminta bukai

biar pun, tapi, dikatakan waris yang baru.

Katanya ia sekarang dipeluk sedan

mungkin bajunya menjadi kumal

dan kainnya puah dipalu himpit

jahitnya tatas tiada bergantian

dan sudahnya

Balai yang tunjung dirobohkan

(ia sudah mendengar daun-daun berbisik

dan angin sampar bersiul-siulan).

Benar katamu itu anakku

dunia yang ditempuh asing selamanya

dan bunyi kerakahnya tajam berbisa

(jangan takut)

nyanyiannya manis mengandung bisa

ialah seperti ular mengintai mangsanya

Tapi telah ku mandihi engkau, bukan?

isim yang ku tanamkan di dalam kulitmu

menjadi penimbul dan penyangga

Kau telah biasa berdiri di saujana hitam

atau duduk di belantara yang panas

jadikanlah ia seperti abu terbang

akan lari dikibas-kibaskan

dan engkau berdiri dengan zat Asma mu

Maka dengan pancaran sinar ‘ainul-yaqin

berjalanlah engkau di titian haqqul-yaqin

InsyaAllah

akan sirnalah lontaran api keraguan

tiada kejahatan tiada kebuntuan

engkaulah yang tetap teguh berdiri.

Solat Hajat untuk Rakyat Palestin

"Hermetically under siege, after decades of occupation and years of Intifada in which Israel destroyed the little infrastructure that the Strip ever had, following many months of total embargo on everything except basic food products, which brought the economy to a halt, with daily invasions of Israeli tanks and extra-judicial killings by Israeli airplanes, and now with gasoline supplies cut and electricity supply to be reduced soon, the Gaza Strip (1.5 million people, 80 percent refugees) is no longer the world's biggest open-air prison. It's a huge laboratory for human experimentation, run by the Israeli army."

- azm _

Oldest man in the US dies in Sacramento at 112

·

SAN FRANCISCO – George Francis, the nation's oldest man, who lived through both world wars, man's first walk on the moon and the election of the first black president, has died. He was 112.

Francis died Saturday of congestive heart failure at a nursing home in Sacramento, his son, Anthony Francis, said Sunday.

"He lived four years in the 19th century, 100 years in the 20th century, and 8 years in the 21st century. We call him the man of three centuries," said the younger Francis, 81.

UCLA gerontologist Dr. Stephen Coles, who maintains a list of the world's oldest people, said Francis lived 112 years and 204 days.

With Francis' death, Walter Breuning of Montana, who is 112 years, 98 days old, becomes the country's oldest living man. At 114, Gertrude Baines of Los Angeles is the nation's oldest living person. The world's oldest person is Maria de Jesus of Portugal, who is 115 years, 109 days old, and the oldest man is Tomoji Tanabe of Japan, who is 113 years, 101 days, Coles said.

Francis, who at his prime barely weighed more than 100 pounds, was born June 6, 1896, in New Orleans. As an African-American in the South, he felt the sting of the Jim Crow-era segregation laws in his early life.

His son said Francis tried to enlist in the U.S. Army during World War I but was turned down because of his stature.

"We always attributed his longevity to his mental and physical toughness," Anthony Francis said.

George Francis quit school after the sixth grade, became an amateur boxer as a young man and later worked as a chauffeur, an auto mechanic and a barber.

He and his wife, Josephine Johnson Francis, had a son and three daughters. Josephine Francis died of cancer in 1964.

Even in his waning days, Francis never lost his passion for politics, his family said. He voted for Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s and for Barack Obama in 2008.

In an interview with The Associated Press after Obama's victory, Francis, who used a wheelchair, said he felt like jumping up and down. "He is going to give black men a break in the world, and give them a better opportunity to live and make more money," he said. "For people who say voting doesn't matter, I think that's crazy."

Anthony Francis said his father was devoted to his family and that he attributed his longevity to them.

"He said `My children and my friends, I live off of them,'" he said.

Besides his four children, Francis is survived by 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great grandchildren.

A Land full of Hatred & Vengeance

Israeli attacks on Gaza kill 227

More than 700 people were injured, including children, as Israeli warplanes and combat helicopters fired at least 30 missiles on the security installations which were reduced to rubble.

The attacks took place as youngsters left school for the day and television pictures from one compound showed uniformed bodies lying in a pile as those wounded writhed in pain.

Rescuers carried bodies showing signs of life to cars and ambulances, while others tried to revive the unconscious. One of the police stations had been hosting a graduation ceremony at the time of the attacks.

Gaza police chief Tawfiq Jabber is among those killed in the raids which took just minutes and left columns of thick black smoke billowing across the area.

There were more casualties in Khan Younis, a refugee camp in the south. At one site, a huge crater was left in the ground. Nearby medics carried people into an ambulance.

Later, a retaliatory strike by Palestinian militants from Gaza killed an Israeli woman. Another two people in the Israeli town of Netivot were wounded, the Magen David Adom ambulance service said.

The Israeli military confirmed they had conducted strikes, saying they targeted "terrorist infrastructure".

An Israeli military spokeswoman said Hamas leaders could be attacked as part of the offensive. Major Avital Leibovitch, said: "Anything belonging to Hamas could be a target. You can interpret that as you like."

The US has urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties and said Hamas must stop rocket attacks into Israel for the violence to cease. However, the White House did not call for an end to the air strikes.

The attacks followed a decision by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's security cabinet to widen reprisals for cross-border Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel. He had warned Hamas to stop firing rockets or pay a heavy price.

On Friday, about a dozen rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza after Israel eased a blockade of the Strip bowing to international pressure to reopen border crossings.

One accidentally struck a northern Gaza house killing two Palestinian sisters, aged five and 13, and wounding a third, Palestinian medics said.

Israel withdrew its forces and settlers from Gaza in 2005 and Mr Olmert has said he does not wish to re-occupy the coastal strip. Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni discussed the crisis on Thursday with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, which borders Gaza to the west and which brokered the truce in June. Mr Mubarak urged restraint on both sides.
